Opportunity for the right person. We are currently looking for a Friday and Sunday caregiver who also would like to find a place to live. We are looking for a person to join the team with a caregiving mentality, patience, compassion, nurturing, thoughtfulness, observant, and able to anticipate needs. Creative problem solving helpful as needs change. If this is you, read on.
No frills living 6 miles from the southwest edge of Eugene out Lorane Highway. 15 minutes from groceries. (Walmart on 11th, Fred Myers on 11th, Bi-mart on 18th and Chambers) There is a travel trailer with a private little yard that will eventually be available but is currently occupied by an exiting caregiver. Estimate move out date is the middle of January. In exchange for the trailer and electricity/water, we ask that you start the day with 3 hours of paid caregiving at $20/hr and end the day with another 3 hours paid. Between those hours when duties are light, the trade is to be close and aware of what's going on in the house.
This is a team effort to meet the needs of a quiet 74 year old sweetheart of a man who needs waking hours care. Hours negotiable. Other jobs available for pay. (Yard work, home maintenance and improvement).
He is not ambulatory and needs food provided, transferring between bed and electric wheelchair, daily cleaning, changing, help dressing etc. He tries to be as independent as possible but is very cooperative. His diet is simple with a love of veggies. Meat cooking optional as long as he gets enough protein. He has been a vegan and a carnivore's during his life so he is flexible around meat but not around healthy options.
He should have been able-bodies into his 90s for all the care and disipline he put into living! Genetic neurological issues makes independence impossible. (PSP if you want to look it up) The goal as a caregiver is to take the load off him while his body falls apart and keep him as comfortable as possible. It's important to have someone close if something comes up and to anticipate his needs as you get to know him. He is a proud man with a wry sense of humor and does not wallow in self-pity. He's pleasant and easy going to be around. He once had a brilliant and methodical mind but chose to spend his days in nature and building with his hands. To attest to his easy going nature, he still has his original caregiver who has been working for him about 3 years. He reads (though retains little) and watches TV or birds (a passion of his since childhood). Part of the caregiver job is to keep bird feeders full. Little outings are welcome.
Perfume and smoke free house. Caregiving experience helpful but it’s mostly about the temperament. We will train.
Other opportunities in yard work and repairs dependent on aptitude.
Located in a quiet area with a wildlife sanctuary across the road (and a trail). 9 acre of land that shares a driveway with friendly and helpful neighbors.
House was and is still mid remodel when his illness struck so it has some rough, unfinished bits. I'm trying to deal with it in my spare time.
Background check and personal references.
If you are interested in being a live in caregiver, the second part of this will happen when the trailer is vacant. In the mean time I am happy to pay for morning and evening care on Friday and Sunday at $20/hr. Come meet the rest of the team and see if this job is for you!
