Beginning Russian I is for students with no prior knowledge of Russian; the course provides instruction for beginners with attention to a range of language skills: reading, writing, listening comprehension, pronunciation and speaking.
Upon successful completion of Russian I, a student …
• can read simple texts;
• has basic “survival skills”—listening comprehension and speaking ability sufficient to “get by” in some everyday situations;
• knows a core high-frequency vocabulary of approximately 600 words;
• has an understanding of the essential grammar of Russian: gender, number and case agreement of nouns and their modifiers; forms and basic meanings of four (of the six) grammatical cases; verb conjugation.
In addition, the course will help students recognize common knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, and behavioral patterns of the Russian peoples, and to detect and conform to fundamental verbal and nonverbal cultural norms.
