I've been trying to think of how to write this posting for awhile so it might sound kind of scattered. At this point I'm just going to throw it out there and see if anyone is interested.
I'm looking for people that might want to form a group to create a gaming community / game server rental service. Was thinking a group of 2-5 people.
I have the equipment to startup and have hosted many different games before.
Currently I live in a small apartment and don't have the space to run the server 24/7, so someone would have to be able to host. This would require that you have decent Internet connection. I do have a friend that is interested in hosting. He doesn't live in city so not sure what kind of internet speeds he could get.
When I used to run the server 24/7 (high performance mode. 4-5 servers. 20-50 players)
It was only $5-10 a month to the electric bill. Barely noticeable. Couldn't really prove it was the server using the extra power either.
I don't plan on handing my equipment over to just anyone. We're going to have to meet up and discuss this quite a bit. Come to some sort of agreement with people that are serious about building something.
This probably isn't something that will instantly make money(or maybe it will?). So its going to have to be a hobby kinda thing at first.
Examples: Ark:Survival Evolved, Atlas, Arma2(DayZ and Exile mod), Arma3 (DayZ and custom Exile mod), DayZ, Conan:Exiles, World of Warcraft (Vanilla, BC and Lich), Don't Starve Together, StarBound, Space Engineers, Rust and more.
Server was built mainly for gaming so it has some decent specs. I tried to focus on performance when I built it. So it does perform pretty well. I just don't have ram capped.
We would have to start small (2-5 game servers) and use any income generated to pay costs (Internet & Power bills) then increase ram. Eventually adding more machines.
Been using Fiverr to advertise a basic $5 24 hour rental.
My ad also offers information/assistance on setting up for those that just need a help setting up their own servers, which seems to attract a lot of attention.
I've actually only sold a few (2 orders. 7 total packages) in the month I've been doing it, but I believe a lot of that is because I can't run for long term.
Most people that contact/purchase just want assistance setting up, modding or changing setting of a server they rented from a hosting site and they just want to play. Aren't really interested in learning the scripting/setup.
My thoughts were:
Have a few community servers and website where people could donate.
Be very transparent on costs of running and possible upgrades.
Setup Fiverr with better options and packages.
Get a server rack going. Upgrade current server to max potential(RAM cap and maybe switch to hex cores. ~$300 total) Then add more servers as we can find for decent price to build. I've got a pretty good understanding of what most games will require for machine resources.
I do pretty well at machines, scripting, setup and hosting. People maybe not so much. lol
Main thing I'm looking for is a community manager that deals with people well, has an understanding of making a website/discord/patreon/crowdfunding(ect) and what it takes to run a community. I did really well alone for a long time. Its not easy by any means.
do NOT contact me with unsolicited services or offers
