What is a herdshare?
Simply put, it's a membership in a herd of cows. It allows you to get raw milk from "your own cows" by making you a partial owner of our herd of cows.
The great part about having a "membership" to a cow rather than owning one, is you simply pay a "boarding fee" for us, the farmers, to feed, milk, and manage day-to-day care (veterinary care, breeding decisions, calf care, etc). There is an initial buy-in fee of $10 per share. This is a one-time, fully refundable fee - we will happily buy your shares back should you ever need to cancel your contract. The weekly board/care fee for each share is $8/week, which results in approximately 1/2 gallon/week (this will be fairly consistent but MAY occasionally drop slightly if multiple cows need to be dried off for calving at the same time). So, 2 shares would be 1 gallon and $16, 3 shares would be 1.5 gallons and $24, etc, etc.
Our herd has free access to pasture 24/7, as well as free choice grass hay, and a portion of non-GMO, soy/corn-free feed and alfalfa at milking time. All cows are confirmed A2A2 and receive a clean bill of health before each lactation. We work hard to ensure every cow stays in good health, and should any cow show signs of being even slightly "off", her milk will be withheld from production until we are confident she is back to 100%.
We milk by machine following a rigorous cleaning routine and all equipment is sanitized following each milking. Milk immediately goes into a chiller to be brought to the proper temperature before being bottled in glass jars and stored in a commercial grade refrigerator.
