Pencil post beds were a style of four poster beds, made often in the 1700s, and have stood the test of time as an attractive, elegantly simple bed style. Reminiscent of a pencil, the four posts gently taper from about mattress height up to nearly seven feet high and, on this bed, the posts also taper down to the floor. The bed is made almost entirely of pine, except for a center rail that is maple and the canopy is alder.

The posts start with a 3 1/2” square post and taper up to 2” octagon and down to a 2 3/4” octagon. They are 81” high. The bed is made for a California King mattress which is 6’ wide by 7’ long so the bed is slightly wider and longer. The rails join the posts with mortise and tenon joints and are held tightly in place with either bolts and embedded nuts or with lag screws. The head board is held in place by compression of the posts being held by bolts into the head rail. The bed is about 30 years old, was hand made, and is in excellent condition. Because of its size, the bed comes completely apart to more easily maneuver it. It breaks down into 4 posts, 2 side rails and one center rail, 2 end rails, one head board plus 6 pieces that comprise the canopy. Looking online, pencil post beds like this one sell for $3,000 to $6,000. You can buy this one for $500 (cash only) and for an additional $100 cash have the 10 year old California King mattress, the two pallets, and two sets of California King sheets and blankets. It is currently dismantled but comes with instructions for assembling it and disassembling it. You will need a 9/16” socket wrench to reassemble. It’s a great price for a beautiful piece of furniture.
