History
For over forty-five years ESS has been on the cutting edge of audiophile sound reproduction. The original design of the “pyramid-shaped” AMT 1’s (see other postings) in 1973 introduced a new benchmark for high-end speaker performance
Most ESS pyramid shaped speakers utilized a 12" woofer, a passive deep bass radiator and the AMT... some enthusiasts complained about lack of mid-range emphasis through the 12" woofer and the AMT
As a result, one of the most treasured ESS models... the 1974 ESS AMT 3 Rock Monitors were designed, adding an isolated 6" mid-range driver to compliment the two 10" woofers
Along with a cavernous internal cabinet volume and the Air Motion Transformer tweeter... the result is spot-on accuracy... superior vocal mid-range reproduction and superb balanced sound quality
Technical overview
German Scientist Oskar Heil's Famous *Air Motion Transformer (A.M.T.) tweeter
* A.M.T: Accordion-like folded Metalized Mylar pleats 0.0005 inch thick suspended
within a powerful opposing magnetic field ...
Applied audio signals react to the magnetic field and stimulate the Mylar membrane.
The bellows-like motion of the folded pleats "squeezes" air out five times faster then
the air motion of a conventional cone / dome tweeter
* See diagram above
