The Garden Specialist supports the New Dream Family Center's goal to foster a love of our planet through the study and examination of nature, gardening, science and a food & water curriculum, and helping the teaching staff to understand and utilize the opportunities for learning in the garden by bringing the 'outdoors indoors' and actively participating with hands-on enrichments directly in the gardens.

The Garden Specialist is part of a team consisting of themselves and the Spanish Specialist. Together, they will develop monthly and weekly plans using STEM curriculum that explores gardening, science and playful exploration of the living world. The Garden Specialist will be responsible for maintaining the organic gardens including compost and keeping the materials and supplies clean and orderly while ensuring the safety of the children and staff.

The Garden Specialist will work directly with the teachers, collecting supplies needed to deliver the curriculum, and at times be available when they deliver the curriculum to children. The Spanish Specialist will be working with the teachers and children to enhance the lesson in Spanish.

The Garden Specialist will be working with children from 24 months - 12 years old and is expected to be able to lift a range of 5-40+ lbs. and expected to stand for long periods of time as well as change positions frequently during the scope of the position.

The Garden Specialist is responsible for creating and implementing annual fundraising events that include community outreach for donations and an Annual Plant Sale that benefit the New Dream Garden Program, as well as communicating with children and families about garden plans, activities, and events.

The expected hours will be from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Mon-Friday with the flexibility to increase or decrease as the seasons progress.

This position does not require you to be teacher qualified, as children will always be under the care of their teacher. However, experience working with young children is a plus!

Applicant must be successfully enrolled in the Oregon Criminal Background Registry prior to employment.
