Set of six lusterware opalescent canisters - 3 small, 3 large - from White Block of Germany in excellent structural condition. The fact that the lids don't fit perfectly and are different from one to the other indicates they were handmade.
All exhibit their age as the gold lettering has been rubbed away for the most part.
Of the Victorian era, they were probably made at or before the time of World War I. The lusterware rainbow gleam is caused by metallic oxides added to a pottery glaze after the cream-colored base porcelain is baked and enameled.
• (3) 4-3/4" tall (with lid) x 2-1/2" wide with Mustard, Allspice and Cloves, weighing between 5.5 and 6 oz.
• (3) 8" tall (with lid) x 4" wide with Flour, Oatmeal and Coffee, weighing between 1.11 and 1.9 oz. The word Coffee is all but gone from this canister.
• The Oatmeal canister has two small cracks in the rim, but neither are structurally damaging. The "chip" in the rim of another large one appears to be glazed over so was there during manufacturing.
