One example; Murphy and Me on Franklin in the building where Looking Glass is now and it used to pack out... at least 50 tables all full all the time ... paid 300 a night .... and they were good bands too ... The Sneakers, Sea Food Mama (aka; Quarterflash), The Original Party Kings, Curtis Selgado, Robert Cray, Wheatfield and many other very talented bands played there and in other clubs in Eugene. There was a thriving music scene here believe it or not!
Players typically made $75 a night on 3 night a week doing sit down gigs ...There were about 8 bars with bands up and down Main in Springtucky not to mention numerous others in Eugene. There were talented players in the area (because there was work). There were several decent music stores to serve them as well ... Ohh! and there were several real recording studios here too ... Producers on 6th, Triad on Willamette, Real to Reel on Campus just to mention a few. ... Things are very different in Eugene now. “... Were not in Kansas Toto.” If you want to play for a living you need to be where there is a demand ... Austin, LA, New York, Florida, Las Vegas / Reno or Nashville .... not Eugene.
Club owners are still screwing over the community musicians. Have you noticed that every single ad, dealing with establishments treating musicians unfairly financialy, (like this one!), always gets flagged. It's the club owners that are doing this. They want to keep you all "dumbed down" and they don't like it when someone like me comes along and tries to open your eyes to how poorly they're treating us. Let's not accept this "$300/night" garbage that they've been giving out for years anymore and laughing quietly behind your back when you leave. Oh, they do it-I've watched them do it. ;

Well that's always been the problem … crummy bands are willing to play for scab wages just for "fun", exposure and ego ... They have to play for cheap to get gigs, making things more difficult for pros. It's called undercutting and club owners love it. They book lousy bands for cheap for a while to starve out the pros. In the long run they more than recoup any losses on a couple of bad nights or weeks or months due to a bad booking.

well ... back in the 40's and the 50's the music scene (even here in Eugene) was controlled by the Musicians Union ... that's the difference. In all walks of employment the unions were what kept the employers honest ... they had to open the books in labor negotiations. If you didn't hire a union band the bar tenders, cook staff and the wait staff were pulled shutting the club down .... and you know what? EVERYONE made a lot of money … even the bosses.
But there's two sides to the coin. The union handed out all the work. A lot of musician's had trouble getting “hooked up”. If you were a great player and you didn't piss any one off you stood a chance of getting gigs but you could be “black balled” for any number of reasons. Again this was good and bad …. there was an element of corruption but at the same time, the proficiency of working musicians was kept to a high standard. Most working musicians were pretty damn good.
Bottom line, until people get smart and get organized, bosses will pay no more than they have to ... this is true in all phases of employment, including the arts. Organize or stop sniveling.
Club owners talk to each other. We have the ability to do the same using the power of tools like CR to work together to do something about the musicians pay scale in Eugene. But the only way is to organize.

As a club owner from the 90's to 2002 I seen it first hand.
The Oregon Lottery sucks up most of the entertainment cash!
When the Lotto took effect most clubs dropped live music. In the early days we put a cover charge on the door to pay the bands. This is no more because club owners want lotto players.
I seen it time after time. A customer would come out with $30 bucks in their pocket. Buy a $5 drink & and slip five in the machine only to lose it. Then slip the twenty in hoping to get even. Broke after 5 minutes in the bar. While everybody doesn't gamble it took a major chunk out of the entertainment dollar. Trust me! I' seen it, lived it, and live music has suffered since! Oregon Lotto does bad things! Prays on the weak or down and out.

There are 3 things of value to a candidate: Time, Money and People. Everyone has something a candidate can use. If you believe in what a candidate stands for you have an opportunity to give something to that candidate in order to get them elected.
The purpose for money is to get the word out about a candidate. We do that by purchasing signs, literature, ads, etc. Time is that time that people donate to walk around doing door-knocking, putting out signs, helping to work the campaign, designing websites, taking pictures, attending rallies, etc. People means those supporters who will wear the T-shirts, talk about the candidate, write the letters to the editor, passing out business cards while standing in the grocery line.
We candidates, need it all. Some people work a lot of hours and have little time, but they do have funds they can give to support a candidate. Others have lots of time, but no financial resources to donate. Most people can be the "voice in the street", carrying campaign cards and passing them out, putting car magnets on their cars advertising to everyone that they meet in the course of a day.
With more people and time, we need less money, but we cannot delude ourselves into thinking that none is needed. It costs $2200 just to get on the ballots and in the Voters Guides. Donations do not have to be in large chunks (though that is always welcome!). Donations of $5 and $10 and $20 is what made up the bulk of Ron Paul's $6M money bomb on November 5th, 2007. That is support from the people. That is grassroots support! That is what will turn the tide in this country. That is what I, and other liberty candidates like me, am counting on.

Obama has been handed three options by General Stanley McChrystal, commander of the US forces in Afghanistan. These range from 20,000 to 60,000 more troops, which would almost double the US military presence. McChrystal is said to favour an increase of 40,000 men, without which he warns the mission will fail.
So give me some direction where I went wrong with my conclusions. If we had gold as a currency,(meaning paper money could be exchanged for gold at the bank) these currency bubbles wouldn't be created making our problems worse.
It is outrageous to me that a Federal government with a 10+ trillion deficit is telling the people that they have the correct solutions to the problems with more oversight, more regulations and more
power to the federal reserve. We got into the mess by expanding credit lines and creating the illusion of wealth. Debt is not wealth!
