Every talented musician should band together and tell the stupid fucking bar owners "no" to the shitty wages and if your bidding for a party or ?, don't go so low that it brings the worth of all of us down to an unreasonable monetary level. I've seen so many scabs that will go in for $20 and a beer to get a gig from a few other bands - they're so stupid that they don't realize that it hurts all of us. Even if your band is really good, a dumb bar owner will tell you why should I pay you this much when I can pay that other band(the fucking scabs) a lower wage. I always tell them "you get what you pay for in life-call me when your ready to hear a really good band". DON'T BE A FUCKING SELLOUT!

Getting paid poorly?

The solution the this problem might be:

A) Ask a guarantee-get it in writing or give em' one chance and they stiff you bust the place up-no that's a bad idea, just don't play there again.
or
B) Get a guarantee for X percentage of the bar receipts (ex-25%)
or
C) Get yourself some DJ equipment and declare you're a "live performer"-you'll get hired all over town!

If you're at all interested (or just curious) send me an email and i'll send you an mp3 or so, see what you think. can't really define the genre except in negative terms. not metal, funk, folk, country. a cheap synth on the xylophone setting (surprisingly realistic...) and fuzzed out electric guitars...

Actually my band does get paid and gets paid decently, depending on the amount of people we bring. In the beginning not so much the more we play the more fans we get the better the pay. If your complaining about pay then it must be YOU that is in a band that sucks. Also if you were actually from LA then you would know you must guarantee a certain amount of ticket sales, Yes you get paid as long as you sell those tickets! Same goes for up here only your not required to guarantee tickets sales at most venues. Also you would know that that most of the A&R reps aren't hanging out in the clubs looking for talent anymore...

You Moron, don't you know that the original bitch about getting paid and everything that followed was about you? You playing for free was the point. Idiots like you are the one's that ruin it for the rest of us.. You say you play for the love of it, what a load of crap. Apparantly you are not good enough to require cash to play a venue so you use the love of playing as a crutch.. If we all got together and refused to play for free, then we could still love playing and get paid a decent wage making all the years we dedicate to learning our craft and all the rehearsals etc worth it... I lived in L.A. and most venues there the musicians get paid a decent wage. The one's that are free is because the players think they will get a recording contract due to record companie's agents frequenting those venues and that is worth playing for free because there is a gain or at least a possible gain to be had. So listen to the experienced and quit rebutting with ignorant crapola..

Getting Paid 2

No, people should get paid. Most of the time though I believe bands are paid what they deserve. Why should you make more then $20 when your band only brought in 20 people? Oh thats right because those 20 people also drank. Check this out though... That bar has to pay for the drinks, Pay the bartender, the door man, the sound guy, and your playing on there PA. My band has always been paid whether it was a cut from the door or the bar. Sometimes the pay is good sometimes not so good it all depends on how many people we brought in that night. The majority of the time though we have been payed the best when it was someplace that normally doesn't have bands meaning we brought the PA. Never have we been asked to play for free unless it was a benefit show but we always get something out of the deal.

What a lot of it comes down to is Eugene's local music scene is dead. People don't wanna go to local shows and can you blame them? 75% of the local bands are very talented but are playing music that isn't enjoyed by the mass population specially in a college town. The college kids don't wanna go to a club and hear Rar Rar Rar, they want stuff they can dance too. I am out at the local clubs/venues every weekend whether I am playing or just partying. The biggest crowds I see are at Hip Hop clubs or cover bands playing Rock n Roll or Country. I go to a bar where a local band is playing and majority of the time its dead. Mainly because of the music, you can sit and watch people come in the door then leave.

You have to pave your own road in this industry. Meaning you wanna get paid? Do the foot work, get out and promote your band every chance you get. Play as many shows you can even if its only for a couple of bucks. The more people that see you the better the chance you get of gaining fans, which means the more people you get at shows which means better pay!

I just wanted to point out that wanting to get paid doesn't mean you hate playing or see music as just a means to an economic end. Loving to play doesn't mean you need to do it for free; it definitely does not mean that you SHOULD do it for free. This is a false dichotomy, related to the mind-body dualism and obsession with 'purity' so prevalent in western theology and Romantic literature.

And by the way, I'm enjoying most of the reflections on the Eugene music scene, and on being a musician in general. Reflecting on our profession goes along with honing our craft and networking.

What happened to bands playing just because they love to play? My band plays quit a bit around town. We've played the Black Forest, Diablos, Taboo, Goodfellas, a couple random bars that don't normally do shows but held exceptions for us, as well as several festivals. We rarely get paid, but we don't mind. We play for the love of being on stage and playing in front of people. When we do get paid it's an added bonus, usually not much maybe $20-$40. If you want to get paid more bring more people! If your band isn't good enough to bring people then why the hell should you get paid any more? Bands are usually paid an equal cut from the door, meaning each band and the bar takes a cut. If your looking for money, your in the wrong industry and it has always been that way. Hell go down to California where you have to pay to play! Bottom line if your looking for cash join a cover a band, or become a DJ.... Or learn to play because you can't stand not to be playing on that stage and you'll do whatever it takes to be there!

Musicians, as any other artists, have to face that, unless they hit the big time, their hourly wage, especially after factoring in practice time, will be pathetic. They can't blame the bar owners. It's a business. If the bar doesn't pull in much more money from having Band A play than not having a band, then why should they hire Band A to play for high wages. If Band A is just playing for fun then it's worth it for them anyway. And Band A is NOT reducing the market value of live entertainers. If Band B is a professional band and draws a large crowd the bar isn't going to turn down Band B because they can get Band A for next to nothing. Band A and Band B are not in the same market. Toyota coming out with an econo-car that has a brand new sticker price of $4000 has no effect at all on the market value of a Rolls Royce.

And, one can't count the people in a bar that Band A brought in and say that's the NET gain of customers caused by Band A, because there are many people that don't want to hear a live band who would be in the bar but aren't because either the cover turned them off or because Band A is just too loud.

It's not just how much you put into a product that determines its market value. Demand plays a huge factor.

Fellow Musicians,
I am thrilled to come down to Eugene to play at the Grrlz Rock event. I am new to playing in Eugene (I played Cottage Grove last year but am from Portland and mostly travel East and West).

I hope you will come out and that it will be a positive, fun and peaceful vibe. We'll be at Cosmic Pizza Nov 8 at 9:15.

Now I have read the spirited posts. Yes, we all should be getting paid more especially with gas prices gouging our ability to travel. But these are tough times for everybody (bands, promoters, audience members, and bars). At least we have music to fill our souls. I couldn't tell what the first post was about but in my experience most promoters put alot of work into festival type shows--there are worries of liabilities, coordination of bands, and ensuring a draw--and rarely get paid what they should for their time (just like musicians). That's just my two cents.

I am happy to be a part of the event because festivals are great for meeting other musicians and music lovers. Hope you will come out and give a shout out when we're down there. Let's meet and maybe coordinate some means to gig swap between P-town and Eugene.

How about this one...
My band played at The Downtown Lounge with 2 other bands on a Friday night. There were probably about 70 people there...I would say the bands brought about 30 of them.
Music started at 9:45...we went on first and played for 45 minutes.
Next band played for an hour...
Last band played for an hour or so...
The music stopped at about 1am counting teardown/setup.
I asked of we could get paid after the music stopped...around 1 or so.
They told us that they pay the bands at 2am...
So long story short, We showed up at 8:30 for load in...stayed till 2am to get paid.
What did they pay us?
$20 FUCKING DOLLARS!!!
Are you kidding me??????
Jesus Christ, I drank that much from my own money.
$20 dollars....and I was there for 5 1/2 fucking hours.
So let say the 30 people all the bands brought drank $15 dollars each...that totals $450 dollars from the bands fans.
I know for a fact that the other bands made $75 each...
So all the bands got paid were $170 total.

Listen up people...live "Rock/Pop" music is on the edge of being extinct and
Clubs are shutting down everywhere. You can't compete with DJ's and Karaoke. The days of people wanting to stand around and listen to loud music for 3-4 hours at clubs is over.

Previous poster writes "The scene in this area has been taken over by older people with day-jobs and families who are content to play for free or a maybe few drinks. It certainly didn't used to be that way in this town. How are you supposed to get paid when there's a whole lot of these types who will always play for free? You're never going to convince them to stop playing for free because it's their main way of having fun. "
Wrong: Having lived here for some time, I play most every weekend (for pay) I go to the jams, I have found that the people that play for free are mostly: Young newbies, homeless people who hope to get a drink/smoke/sandwich, and the stinky artsie fartsies who will tell you that playing for money waters down/devalues the "pure art of the music." As others have said, club owners do make money - part of it due to live bands and so- the band should get paid.
Not necessarily because they are worth it...but because IT'S A BUSINESS. YOU GET WHAT YOU CONTRACT/AGREE ON. Club owners are too stupid (and they are) to recognize that crappy bands cut into there bar earnings, thuinking they are saving money not paying real talent what they are worth. Then there is one of the biggest clubs that pays bands $300.00 per night by check (cost 30% at tax time kids) but taking in $1000.00 to $2000.00 per night (fri-sat)CASH at the door (tax free for them) On another front, I know of several young bands playing shows almost every weekend for hundreds of other youngsters that pay $5.00 per to get in. Do a little math kids, if only 100 people show up, that's $500.00 in the organizers pocket you are walking away with nothing or $20.00? It's time to take control of your own destiny and collect some money for your hard work and investment! (or beat the crap out of the person stealing from you?)

As a working musician in Eugene, I agree that musicians should get paid for their hard work and talent.....how much always depends on how good they actually are (not how much they have been hyped up to be), and how much the house made while they played. If I was to be paid, let's say $100, for my time playing my bands original music for 45min, I would be GROSSLY underpaid, because my time spent writing music, buying equipment, rehearsing & packing all that equipment around is what is behind that 45 min set. Although, $100 is an acceptable price for us, simply because we usually play bills with several bands, and, in little ol' Eugene, getting paid more than that doesn't happen often.
But, to get paid less feels like an insult, like the club is telling us we aren't worth even a benji....so when we get paid a $20 bill we smile and tell them to keep it because, obviously' they need it more than we do,
or to keep it in a drawer to add to a couple more next time we play. And we are selective about where we play, how often, etc., because of the pay/worth thing.
I think the bottom line is blurry for everyone. I play music because I need to, not for the money. I have a day job in a skilled trade that pays well, so I don't stress on it, but if I didn't, who knows. Surely this issue isn't going away soon, so good luck to everyone in the Eugene music scene.

P.S.- We just got back from doing 16 shows in 4 days in Las Vegas, and when we were introduced to the crowd, even though everyone knew we were from Eugene, they introduced us as from Portland, like being from Eugene is a bad thing... even in Vegas, the reputation for being a nowheresville precedes us.

Geeze, Come on Already People (Eugene, OR)

OK people. I understand the frustration, but this whole EUGENE problem isn't anybody's fault. Cindy and other promoters are trying to make a professional living at this. Venues and clubs are barely scraping by as-is and its gonna get a heck of alot worse in the coming months (aka depression). Better get ready to play FREE shows if you want anyone to show up at all.

That said, if I'm putting my money where my mouth is, you better believe that I'll be looking for bands that can draw a decent crowd and play decent music and MAKE ME MONEY. December made a good point - if you aren't willing to do the work yourself how could you expect someone to do the work for you? People get paid for a reason - why work on some other band's project when you could be investing your own time in your own project. Time is an investment - probably the biggest investment.

If you truly LOVE music then play it well and play for free. My old band played for FREE always - heck we even dished out money for pro sound and lights, but kept the shows FREE. We did it because 1) you don't make money playing music and 2) free was one of our favorite four-letter words 3) we love music.

Kick one of those hobos off a street corner and set-up shop there, or heck - if the hobo is talented have him/her sing along. I'd pay a few bucks to hear some Woody Guthrie on the corner of 7th and Washington, but I sure as hell ain't giving away my money for nothin'. Research ways and means to set-up shows at the WOW Hall, McDonald, or in one of the parks. If you believe in your music, then start saving up and drop a couple thousand on a good show somewhere. Those of you with an entrepreneurial spirit might be able to convince some of the local businesses to sponsor all or part of your event. Invite some other bands in the area and see if you can break even (after paying everyone involved, including the bands). Where there is a will, there is a way.

Ultimately, though - get and keep your day job and focus on a career. Only 1-2% of musicians truly make a GOOD living (as in more than $50K per year) playing music. All the rest of us keep playing because we love it and can afford to keep doing it thanks to our day jobs.

Try playing live for an audiance.......Thats what music is all about!!!!

the Eugene question (catch 22)

How do you get more people to go out and see local live music from all genres?

If you can answer this, then you've solved the decades of frustration by musicians, music venues and promoters.

Look at the facts:

Eugene is a little college town in the middle of Oregon. Oregon is known as a retirement state, meaning there is little money to be made in this state, unless your in health care.

Our population blooms come fall with a bunch of college kids from big cities that come here to gather skills to take back home. They bring some fresh ideas for music and how to put together shows, but it's all short term.

The only hipsters (townies) that are here, have been here to long and have been forced to find a normal job and pay normal bills, thus they can't go out all the time to see shows(like they did when they still rented that room from mom and dad). They're probably the ones that are taking your door fee, serving you drinks, or adjusting your mics.

It's a working class town made up of stoners and football fans. The venues know that DJ's spinning 80's hits or hip-hop is going to get all the drunk girls(and thus the guys looking for drunk girls) or you play some old disco/funk and all the football fans will take their wives out to cut some rug. Hippie jam music is self explanatory for this region. Therefore, your original cutting edge sound that you think you've stumbled upon will never get a draw, regardless how many leaflets you hand out and MySpace bulletins you post.

In conclusion, everyone is here trying to make a bit of cash to keep a roof over their heads and food in their mouth. The venue owners are looking for customers to buy food and drinks. The booking agent and all the people it takes to make a show happen are looking to make a paycheck and still be around music. The musicians are wishing they were that <1% that can live off of playing live music.

It's Eugene, people. It's a city built to make people whine about how hard it is and then leave. Only the strongest survive here.

I have been trying to get a smooth jazz group going with not much luck so far. Come on players, give it a chance. The music is high energy and fun to play, all age groups like the music, at least most of them and the jobs are out there. I did this professionally in Las Vegas and I want to do it here. With a little work, we can have a kick ass band that can perform anywhere but I cannot do it without you, so help me out.. I have a sax man and drummer standing by that believes in what I am doing. If you are a guitar player or keyboard player, all I ask is for you to dedicate 3 months to it and if at that point it isn't what I say it is, then go your way if you want. This project will impress the people we play for. I need you, if you don't want to do it, at least send other players my way please respond to Jerry smoothridejazz@gmail.com

There is a lot of frustration in the music community-- in Eugene, in Portland, and probably everywhere else. The frustration comes from years of being treated as sub-citizens; we pay our taxes, even when we don't get paid for what we do. People constantly tell us to get "real jobs." Secretly we wonder if they're right.

And yet we persist in our musical endeavors. This frustration being vented at Cindy is misdirected anger about the state of the music community and our well-being as members of it. The thing is, no good will ever come of spitting venom and vitriol at the people who are working toward the same goal as you-- in this case, the common goal is a thriving music scene, and things don't thrive in poisonous environments.

Try to put positive change in place, and you will reap what you sow. Conversely, if all you can do is sit at your computer and b*tch about it, you won't get very far in your life. But then, you probably knew that.

It is unfortunate that some people have to work out their personal issues in public forums like CraigsList. Those of us who actually are active members of the music scene and have dealt with Cindy personally know what the deal is. It is a complicated and multi faceted issue why the Eugene music scene is what it is. I remember when it was much better for musicians. People don't go out as much-there are too many other distractions competing for their time and money, club owners can provide a "LIVE" music experience with karaoke and open mics without actually having to pay anyone, there are so many more musicians competing for dates at a smaller number of venues. There is no magic bullet answer. Cindy is a great person and we should be thankful that she invests her time and energy into making positive changes in the Eugene music scene.

My only complaint is that people who book events such as the Eugene Celebration, Country Fair, KLCC Microbrew Festival, Art in the Vineyard etc. seem to book the same acts over and over again. While I love Satin Love Orchestra, Marv Ellis, Misty River, whatever....there is a lot of great talent out here. Take some risks and give our local music scene a much needed infusion of energy. Maybe you'll have to listen to a few more demos and look through a few more promo packs but give it a try and don't be afraid of ORIGINAL music either, it won't bite you.

Take a deep breath and look at the big picture.

Cindy Ingram is doing things to earn a paycheck and better her personal resume. The non musician people of the organizations she works with will be impressed with the events she lists and amount of bands she's represented. Failed bands under her management will not reflect on her as much as you may wish they did.

If small, local acts demand more pay from the venues, you will just find more karaoke and DJ's spinning remixes of top 40 music. Isn't there to much of that already. Of course bands would like to have some sort of leverage when getting a gig, but to many bands competing for a limited amount of places to play that have no patronage of built in listeners, means you take whatever you can get, at whatever price.

Face the facts. There are very few in Eugene who regularly go out to see live music. It's been the same grumbling about that from musicians since I've been here(since '91). With a sliding economy it will only get worse.

If you really enjoy playing the music your playing, just get a day job and keep on keepin on. You'll get to play it live once in a blue moon for two drink tickets. At least a couple people will get to listen to you, as you sip on your free micro.

* Suggestion for newer bands- try and play as the second band on the bill. Most venues won't start the bill till 10pm or later. The second band usually has the most people at the pub(this is a stoner town, so everyone goes home by midnight). After that the crowd thins to barely no one by the time the headliner gets on. Just our experience at the local rock venues that are featuring local artist for a whole evening.

Rock like you mean it!

While I despise the practice in general of charging a band a percentage for return gigs...I would be in your ignorance and eagerness to play, you didn't READ THE CONTRACT. Every booking agent, agency etc... has this written into the contract. The idea is because you are totally amature, inexperienced, ignorant, lazy, possibly too stupid to book your own gig, you would have NEVER played there (or anywhere?)in the 1st place. The work the "agent" did gets you return gigs with income and in theory is worth a 10-15%.
The problem bands usually run into is that the "agent" doesn't accurately represent us as a band- only has the 15% commission in mind and everyone ends up unhappy.
Example:You have a Deathcore band and 45 minutes of material
Agent: "I got you a gig -this place will ROCK!"
Band gets to gig- it's 5 sets at the Elks club in Salem. They have a 65 year old bartender with a decible meter and they only hire classic country acts.
We got 2 bookings with another local agent wannabe years ago, and when we were handed our check, the owner said "I like you guys, but I won't hire you if I have to deal with her"
BTW: It wasn't Cindy I. so maybe it comes with the "agent" territory?

"Pop" is short for "popular" That means somebody likes it, and fortunately for serious musicians (us)-is willing to pay for it. Many not only dream of "making it" but work hard and have the right to make a living doing what they love the most. This is a mean, competitive world- but that's not my fault. Those that play for free are worth every penny. It is ignorant, rude and unacceptable that you should force your half-baked amature, barely-musical, non-entertaining genres on the 97% of the real world (yes kids- the audience makes up over 90% of the real world)that wants to hear: Good music, songs that they know, songs that have Rythm, melody and other mysteries yet unknown to thee(I know you don't really understand, but musicians get what I am talking about and if any audience members are reading - you know too!)Do you consider yourself the "educators"? I have the advantage of being a musician and understanding what people want to hear and all you will ever do is-
Poop in the musical pool -what happens when people see a turd in the pool?
THEY GET OUT. You artsy fartsie fools are going to COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN THE MUSIC SCENE IN EUGENE. Isn't that counterproductive to what you really want? Or do you just want to musically masturbate for 3% of the population that isn't listening anyway- just waiting for their chance to push you off the stage so they can force feed you their lame crap?

I can say that with confidence due to the fact that I am not from Eugene but am from a place where more notable players perform and live. I am a musician and I made a comment about idiots playing for free which ruins it for all musicians in this town and apparantly you cannot handle the truth and are probably one of the idiots playing for free, if you are even good enough to play out.. If I were to change my diaper, it would be filled with crap like you that I pooped out.. So get a life and just listen to the experienced players talking common sense and quit playing these clubs for free..

Do you realize that you (Eugene "musicians") represent only about 3% of the listening audience? With the exception of an open mic night(where you can't swing a dead cat without hitting somebody who thinks they should be on stage), at any given venue -I mean ANY venue, 97% of the audience is there for a "moment"- to be moved, entertained -call it what you will. Many don't even know if the band is good- or care! Whole herds of 20-30 somethings pack the dance floor to Hip-Hop. Rockers that know what real music is/was still loves to hear that. Country music is HUGE because it moves people-they can sing along dance & it shares a story \ experience\moment. In the microcosm of Eugene mediocre-to-bad "folk" music in the name of originality- can be found at every turn. It's neither "original" nor is there a moment to be had. It's musical masturbation at best! According to the "power posters" here, if it entertains non-musicians, but doesn't please other players (them) it's not valid genre.
Thank goodness those of us who make a living playing music, sharing moments, entertaining -don't give a damn what you think :)
Get over yourselves. You are a fractional minority and you are wrong.

I am in the process of starting a lounge band and would like to find a stand-up bass player who is interested. Should possess a sense of humor and desire to play some serious lounge music AND some music re-arranged into the "lounge style". We are considering doing everything from Paul Anka, to AC/CD, to Muppet Show songs.
Some of this music will be presented in a totally tongue-in-cheek style. Our lead singer is going to ham it up and be an entertainer as well as a good singer.

If this sounds good to you why not give it a try?

I am terrible at replying to emails, I get all shy about actually meeting people face to face (I've had too many stalkers maybe?), but I REALLY want to eventually make a band. I dont have internet at my place so it make take me a bit to reply.
